Let’s face it: Many of us haven’t exactly been paying attention to our appearance over the past year. While I have a soft spot for fashion and shoes, for the past ten months or so my clothing has been more about one thing: coziness. When the weather got cold, I found myself wanting something to keep my feet warm. I saw my kids grabbing their big, furry boot slippers and wishing they had them in my size. Then I heard a few friends raving about their Uggs. Uggs? Didn’t they go out of style after I left college a few decades ago? In fact, with their big, puffy, cartoonish shape…were they ever really in style? Plus, they seemed a bit too expensive for something I probably wouldn’t wear outside of my house. Aside from the fashion aspect, living in Portland, Oregon means almost constant rain or drizzle for much of the year and Uggs just didn’t seem like the best choice for a humid climate. I also wondered how long they would last and if my feet would sweat from hanging out in the natural wool lining that Uggs are famous for. My friends assured me that they wouldn’t. They told me that they would last for years, that this was an investment. But I still couldn’t bring myself to buy a pair. The boots you may know best can cost almost $200. Spending $200 on what basically seemed like luxury slippers to me was just out of the question. I considered buying knockoffs, but no pair I saw had the real wool lining. If they did, they cost about the same as the Uggs, and at that point I figured I might as well get the high-end branded models. Buy good, not twice, right?
Christmas came and I must have entertained my husband by this point with hours of discussions about Ugg boots, so he figured I really wanted them but would never spend the money on something so frivolous for myself. So I was super excited when I got a pair of Uggs on Christmas morning. I have to tell you, I was a fool to question their value. A fool! These are the coziest things I’ve ever put on. I’ve worn them almost every day since I got them and they keep me warm and comfortable. I’ve had no problems with sweaty feet because the real wool lining wicks away the moisture and keeps my feet dry and happy. Yesterday I dropped off a few things at a friend’s house and forgot to take them off and change into “street shoes” before leaving the house. I have no regrets. Now that I know, I don’t see them as a fashion faux pas, but as a sign of intelligence. Wearing super comfortable footwear is smart. Anyone judging them just hasn’t tried them yet. Plus, they feel high quality and I think they’ll last for years. For me, they’re absolutely worth the price.
